Neurotoxins Botox and Dysport

Neuroxins have become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for the face. The correct term is really Neurotoxin and we will often utilize the word “Botox” interchangeably for any brand of Neurotxin such as Dysport, Xeomin, Belotero, and several others. Neurotoxins can dramatically reduce facial lines from overactive muscles. Botox and Dysport are both a highly safe and effective non-surgical procedure, with minimal side effects. Dr. Katz has extensive experience with both Botox and Dysport.

What are BOTOX and Dysport and are they Safe?

Botox is a naturally occurring purified protein that blocks the muscles from contracting. It only affects the area where it is placed. Neurotoxin injections can reduce the signs of aging by reducing the muscle activity and wrinkles of the eyebrow and forehead. The reduction of frown lines is especially effective. Botox has been used safely for over 20 years and has been FDA approved for facial wrinkles since 2002.

Why Use Botox or Dysport?

Dynamic facial wrinkles are caused by contractions of the muscles of the face every time you express emotions. The more expressive you are, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. These lines may be misinterpreted as anger, anxiety, fatigue and, of course, aging. Fillers and surgical procedures such as a brow lift can tighten the skin and muscles around these lines, but do not address the underlying muscle pull, which eventually deepens the facial wrinkles. So for dynamic facial lines from overactive muscles of the upper face, neurotoxin (botox or Dysport) are usually the best treatment.

How are Neurtoxins Given?

The treatment takes 10 minutes and we use the tiniest needles available therefore Botox treatments typically have minimal discomfort. Results are noticeable usually within 72 hours and may last 3-4 months. You may return to normal activities immediately.

Patients may elect to repeat Botox treatments when it fully wears off. However, if the face is re-treated as soon as the muscles start to move, the facial muscles never regain their memory. After a number of re-treatments the interval between may become longer.

What About “Botox” for TMJ?

botox cosmeticChronic clenching of the jaw or grinding of the teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can have a variety of problematic effects. It can cause pain and tension in the jaw to chronic headaches or migraines to earaches and facial pain to damage to your teeth. These symptoms make bruxism an ever-present, constantly painful condition. This is why Dr. Ronald Katz treats his patients with Neurotxin injections (Botox or Dysport)  in the masseter and Temporalis muscles. Bruxism is extremely common, affecting many people across the country and around the world, especially with an uptick in incidence since the COVID pandemic. Common risk factors for developing bruxism include stress, frustration, and anxiety – feelings that many of us experience daily. Treatments like mouth guards help to mitigate the symptoms of the condition – such as preventing tooth damage – rather than address the root cause. Some individuals are just told to “reduce the stress in your life” which often feels like wishful thinking. If you have tried mouth guards, muscle relaxation activities, or other treatments and nothing is working for you, you may be the perfect candidate for Botox injections for jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
